The City of Des Moines is pleased to provide accommodations to disabled individuals or groups and encourages participation in City government. City of Des Moines' Boards, Commissions, & Committees
The City of Des Moines’ Boards, Commissions, and Committees are special groups delegated to consider some matter. Members of these groups are appointed by City Council Members. Below is a list of the groups, many with additional information available on their respective Websites. If you are interested in serving on any of the groups you may apply for appointment using the links above. The Neighborhood Revitalization Board requires completion of a separate application. Most board seats have no special requirement, other than being a citizen of Des Moines. However, some seats require special criteria for members.
Birth and Marriage Certificates
The City Clerk's Office is not responsible for birth and marriage licenses but we are happy to provide you with information on how to obtain these vital records.
Information on the requirements to obtain marriage license or get a copy of a marriage certificate is available by calling (515) 286-3160 or on the Polk County Recorder's website
If you were born in Polk County birth certificates copies are available through the Polk County Recorder's Office. You can reach them by calling (515) 286-3160 or via their website
If you were not born in Polk County but were born in Iowa, birth certificates copies are available through the State of Iowa Department of Public Health at (515) 281-4944 or via their website
To obtain a Death Certificate for insurance policies, estate settlement, or real estate transfers, contact the Polk County Recorder's Office
at (515) 286-3160.
To obtain a raised seal certified copy of a death certificate you can write to the Recorder or go to the office. They will only have the record if the person died in Polk County or if they were a Polk County resident at the time of death. They do not have death records prior to July 1, 1941.

Registration cards are available to anyone who is over 17 1/2 years of age. Registration cards may be obtained in person or by mail. For more information on registering to vote, call the Polk County Election Office
