Free Fishing Friday

Enjoy a night of free fishing at Gray's Lake Park from 5-8 p.m. Stop by and try out your fishing skills. If you are interested in giving fishing a try for the first time, don’t worry, we will be there to help you. Bait and supplies will be on hand to use at no cost and it is Free Fishing Weekend in Iowa, so a fishing license is not required. No registration required to participate.

Carp Fest

Location: Gray's Lake Park - 2101 Fleur Drive

Saturday morning June 3rd at Gray’s Lake, Des Moines Parks and Recreation is partnering with the Des Moines Izaak Walton League and Iowa DNR to bring you Carp Fest.

Registration for this free carp fishing tournament begins at 8:00 am with fishing from 9:00 to 11:30 am. There will be a prize for the longest carp caught in both adult and a children’s category. Bait will be provided as well as fishing gear and instructions for anyone new to carp fishing.  

June 2, 3 & 4 are free fishing days in Iowa, so no fishing license is required for this event. Carp caught may be kept by the fisherman or donated onsite to the wildlife rehabilitation organization S.O.A.R.

Train the Trainer - Stand Up Paddleboard Part 1

Parks and Recreation along with the Iowa DNR are offering a Train the Trainer in Stand Up Paddleboard basic skills course at Grays Lake June 10-11th. This class will be for those who will be leading groups and who need a basic understanding of SUP basics for teaching. Much of the same risk and group management that are included with canoe/kayak classes will also be taught here. If you are only wanting to learn the basics of Stand Up Paddleboarding, sign up for one of our Introduction to SUP classes. Registration is $25 and includes all the equipment and instructions.
