08/25/2018 09:00 AMWoodland Cemetery TourFew places in Des Moines hold as much history as the grounds of Woodland Cemetery. Join local historian and educator Archie Cook on a tour through the grassy knolls and stately trees of one of our city's oldest treasures. In 1848, area farmers on the outskirts of the city donated the first 5.5 acres for Woodland Cemetery. Now it stands as the final resting place of some of the people who built and shaped our city to what it is today.

Tours last approximately 2.5 hours and are free. A donation is suggested and all donations go towards providing headstones for infants buried in the cemetery.

Children and strollers are permitted but some sections of the tour will not be easily accessible for strollers due to rough terrain.

Saturday, September 15 from 1-3:30 p.m.

09/15/2018 01:00 PMWoodland Cemetery TourFew places in Des Moines hold as much history as the grounds of Woodland Cemetery.

09/20/2018 05:30 PMUpcycle Stewards Volunteer EventJoin the community helping remove invasive species from our woodlands. Removing these invaders opens the woodland floor allowing native plants with deeper root systems to re-establish. Native plants hold the soils in place, provide habitat and act as filters improving our water quality. Invasive plants such as honeysuckle are UPCYCLE’d after they are removed and given to the Blank Park Zoo for food and fun for their animals.

We will not visit the zoo after each invasive species removal event. If UPCYCLE Steward volunteers participate in all three volunteer events (July 19, August 16, September 20) they will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a family four pack entrance to the zoo along with a “feed bundle” which includes food to feed the parakeets, ostriches, giraffes, kid's kingdom animals and fish!

Volunteers should meet in the park at the SE public parking lot. Contact parksvolunteer@dmgov.org for more information.
