Tour DM Parks
Tour DM Parks is back again as a celebration of National Parks and Recreation Month. We have designated 31 locations throughout the park system. Participants who visit all 31 spots and share a photo with the hashtag #tourdmparks can compete to win the grand prize of $1,000 CASH courtesy of our sponsor, the Friends of the Des Moines Parks.
Yoga In the Park
Des Moines Parks and Recreation and UnityPoint Health - Des Moines invite you to start your Saturday mornings with a free weekly yoga session at a variety of Des Moines Parks. Join us every Saturday, June 3 through September 30 from 9 – 10 a.m. for yoga led by volunteer instructors from around the metro.
Wading Pool Closures
Due to staffing shortages, our team will not be able to open all wading pools. Four facilities will close per week on a rotating basis that is equally distributed. The schedule is subject to change as personnel levels grow, we will then make changes and increase the number of wading pools open.
Stand Up Paddleboard Classes
Des Moines Parks and Recreation along with the Iowa DNR are offering Stand Up Paddleboard basic skills courses at Grays Lake Park. These courses are designed to introduce and expose participants to the basics of Stand Up Paddleboarding in a flat water environment.

Join us during July and August at Gray's Lake Park from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. to collect invasive species and UPCYCLE them into food and fun for Blank Park Zoo’s animals. Gloves and tools are provided and please come prepared for working outdoors! No registration required.

Cemetery Decoration Removal Begins July 1
The removal of cemetery decorations that have been placed on gravesites in municipal cemeteries will begin July 1. Citizens who have decorated gravesites with materials they would like to keep must remove them no later than Friday, June 30.
Des Moines Parks and Recreation department manages 63 miles of paved multi-use and 18 miles of nature trails.
Our department is responsible for the management of 76 parks, over 4,000 acres of parkland, 81 miles of trails, seven cemeteries and numerous municipal facilities.
